Cabbage diet

Friday, April 11th, 2008

There have been many types of diets introduced in the market. A few have managed to maintain no side effects and one of them is the Cabbage diet. The cabbage soup diet is also one such diet. There is a particular method in which you prepare the cabbage soup and then have a detailed and systematic plan for seven days.

This is definitely a good option for many (provided it really works). The major advantage is the short time frame it works in. It just requires seven days to a show result, that sounds very short, and it is just a week now that sounds even shorter. Let’s see how the seven day plan works?

The first day of the diet plan starts with fruits. It says that you can have any fruit that you like except banana. Along with only fruits you would have to consume the cabbage soup. The second day you have all kinds of veggies and the soup at dinner. The third day is a combination of the first and the second day i.e. fruits, veggies and soup. The forth day is all about up to 6 bananas and skim milk along with the soup. The fifth day is about 10-20 ounces of beef, 6 to 8 glasses of water, a can of tomatoes and the soup. Day six is all the vegetables and the beef along with the soup. The last day is unsweetened fruit juice, brown rice, vegetables and the soup. One good thing about the diet plan is that it does not restrict the amount of intake.

Combination of nutrition and cigarette smoking

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

The word ‘smoking’ reminds one of dreadful diseases such as emphysema, lung cancer, heart disease, and other diseases related to the respiratory system. As per the survey in USA, nearly 18% of their population has been victims of cigarette smoking and resulted in premature deaths. The figures are not very much appreciable world wide as well. Little is known about smoking and that it causes the essential minerals to drain out.

The reason behind this is very simple. Cigarette contains nicotine, which blocks the respiratory track. It also prohibits the absorption of vitamin C into the body. Vitamin C acts as an anti oxidant, thereby protecting the body from free radicals. Thus the body cells do not get damaged and cardiovascular diseases are prevented. More the frequency of smoking, more is the obstruction to the entry of vitamin C. To nullify this effect, smokers should increase their vitamin intake by 2000 mg/day.

It’s very difficult to quit smoking, once one gets addicted to it. To protect the body from the harms caused by smoking, various measures such as meditation, exercise, etc. should be incorporated. This may help in reducing stress. Many people are under the impression that smoking reduces stress. It is advisable that instead of resorting to these artificial methods, the above mentioned methods would work out. A healthy conversation is essential between doctors and smokers. This will help the smokers to develop the right attitude, the required enthusiasm and ultimately quit smoking. Let’s hope to have a smoke-free world!

Fat and Metabolism

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

It’s a well known fact that weight loss can be caused by increasing the metabolism of the body. Some people can digest anything because their metabolism is very high. They are endowed with it. But, metabolism of any person can be upgraded as per his/her own wish and the body can be brought into shape at a quicker rate. People possessing a high metabolism can burn any number of calories irrespective of their diet. Metabolism can be defined as the quantity of energy used by the body to have it maintained. This maintenance is inclusive of using, processing, acquiring, transporting, and finally disposing off food along with nutrients.

This goes to show that the body actually consumes energy when the person starts eating and chewing food. The foods that consume more energy while eating end up using more energy while digesting. Hence, it is advisable to have fibrous foods. For instance- if bread of high fiber content is chewed, it will take hell of a time to break it into carbohydrates and add to the energy. Due to this, the person will not feel hungry soon and avoid eating more. Thus, the diet would be regularized.

The other way to increase one’s metabolism is to exercise. Muscles end up burning more calories than fat. Hence, toning and strengthening the muscles helps in increasing the metabolism a great deal. Changing the eating methods can also help in increasing metabolism and burning off the extra fat. For instance- The easily digestible food items should be avoided.

Lose weight by eating fish

Monday, April 7th, 2008

It is a known fact that seafood has a direct connection with weight loss. For instance- a survey carried out in 2004 stated that a diet rich in fish lessened both- blood levels due to leptin and body weight. Leptin is defined as a hormone that causes storage of body fat in the form of calories.

Some experiments have been carried out on mice- which have shown that DHA and EPA are present in sardines, tuna, sablefish, and salmon. DHA and EPA are the omega-3s having a chained structure. Hence, the people intending to lose weight have to go hunting for these fishes.

Fish oil has been tested on mice by the Czech researchers and some amazing results have been recorded. When the intake of DHA and FPA was increased to 12% (from 1%), there was an alarming reduction of weight gain caused due to high-fat. It also caused reduction of accretion of adipose, i.e. fat cells, in the abdomen, in particular. Thus, it reduced the risk of a heart attack. The foods containing DHA and EPA boosted the metabolism of glucose (sugar) and fat as well.

But, this is a slow process. Utmost patience is needed while following this diet. The human body always takes time to adapt to the changes. Similarly, the reprogramming of genes start very slowly, hence it takes time to give out positive results. Moreover, the intake of saturated fat and foods with a high content of carbohydrates and vegetable oils, and red meat should be reduced.
