Reduce tummy fat

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Majority of the overweight people have 80% of the fat on their tummy. Hence, when weight loss is to be obtained, the entire concentration should be focused on the tummy fat. Obesity is said to be an epidemic now a day, but the sentence needs a bit of revision. It should be said that the actual epidemic is tummy fat. There are people who possess fat on the legs and hands or distributed all over their bodies in an equal proportion, but most of the obese people today carry extra fat on the tummy rather than other parts of the body. Of course, it has a genuine reason. The life today is stressful, rushed and, hectic. Cooking on a daily basis has almost vanished, and even if it exists, it has nothing to do with actual cooking. It involves warming up of microwave meals, or going for instant preparations.

Today, convenience is given more importance than health and nutrition. That’s why fast foods are in great demand. This process saves a lot of time and effort, but gives way to tummy fat. Human body is an efficient and a smart machine. When it is fed with convenience and junk food, it does not get the required nutrition. It instead gets empty calories and too much of sugar. The body wants the person to keep going. Hence, it provides the tummy with extra fat, as legs and arms need to be kept active and tummy is the central part which is inactive. It can be avoided only by eating protein, vegetables and fruit and completely eliminating junk food from the diet. The doctor should be consulted regarding this change in diet.

Slow eating-a key to weight loss

Friday, March 28th, 2008

McDonald’s has arrived in Italy! This led to the ‘Slow Food Movement’, which gained a lot of momentum in the US. This movement had a five point program: production of eco-friendly food and land stewardship, revival of table and kitchen as a means of community, culture, and pleasure, proliferations and invigoration of seasonal, regional culinary traditions, creation of a virtuous, ecologically-oriented, and collaborative globalization, and living a harmonius and slower life.

As stated above, the purpose of slow movement is to pay more attention to the work of eating; and thereby stop the belly and diabetes epidemic from spreading. The research regarding slow eating states that the “I’m full” signal reaches the brain within 15 minutes from one’s gut. So, logically, it proves the fact that fast eaters end up eating beyond their limits, and by the time they get into their senses, they have already gulped so much of food. The research also proves that people end up eating more when they try to concentrate on a number of things at a time, say- watching television, reading, or talking. A paper regarding this was presented by the researchers from Rode Island University titled ‘Eating rate and satiation’ at NAASO (Obesity Society) in 2006 meeting at Boston. According to them fast eaters gulped food 3.5 times more than the slow eaters. They thereby drew the conclusion that 90% of the fattest people consisted of fast eaters. It was also observed that Americans were the fastest eaters in the world.

Lose weight and prevent diabetes

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

In March 2005, an announcement regarding the prevention of Diabetes was made by the ‘American Diabetes Association’. It stated that fat people were more prone to Diabetes. The study was conducted at around 25 centers (medical centers) all over America and had thousands of volunteers to get their habits medically observed and follow exercise and dietary recommendations. Majority of the volunteers were diagnosed with a condition called ‘pre-diabetes’, where the levels of sugar in the blood were abnormal, i.e. more than normal, but not in the diabetic range. It was also predicted that around 60% of pre-diabetic people will turn out to be diabetic within the next 10 years.

Volunteers were separated into 2 groups. Half of them were given recommendations regarding the diet. The rest of them also got the same recommendations, in addition to the recommendation of exercising daily for at least half an hour. The exercise had to be done five days a week. The results suggested that the volunteers belonging to the second category had less chances of getting diabetes; as less as 58%. The reason was very simple. The volunteers belonging to the second category eventually lost weight, and hence were less prone to diabetes. The people from the first cluster had a significant chance of lessening the level of blood sugar to normal, which seemed impossible before.

This goes on to prove that weight loss not only avoids diabetes, but also reverses the harm caused by obesity to the cells producing insulin. It requires just 5-7% of weight loss.

Lemonade diet

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

The Lemonade diet is in great demand these days. It consists of a juicy fast food which acts as a detox or a body cleanser. Soup is also not allowed in this diet. This diet is better called as ‘The Master Cleanser’. Stanley Burroughs, the famous naturopath was the creator of the lemonade diet. The diet helps the body in getting rid of toxins that get built when the eating habits are irregular. It helps in cleaning the liver, kidneys, and digestive tract of the body.

It has been reported that majority of the people have lost up to 2 pounds (of fat content) everyday after following this diet. It is also believed not to have any side effects. It has gained popularity and continues to do so due to its wide success amongst some of the celebrities. After having the lemonade, herbal tea (unsweetened) or water can be drunk. There is no limit as to how much tea or water can be inebriated. As per the theory of Burroughs, the maple syrup and lemon juice can be taken during this fasting period. Cayenne pepper can be used to increase the metabolism thereby burning fat. This diet can be followed for a period of 3-10 days.

The weight may go down drastically like majority of the ‘low-calorie detox’ programs, but nothing to worry about. It can be gotten back by resuming the pre-lemonade diet after the completion of this program. But it is advisable to resume to the normal diet with soups, as the 10 day long fast will not allow the digestion of anything solid.
