Lose weight by eating fish

Monday, April 7th, 2008

It is a known fact that seafood has a direct connection with weight loss. For instance- a survey carried out in 2004 stated that a diet rich in fish lessened both- blood levels due to leptin and body weight. Leptin is defined as a hormone that causes storage of body fat in the form of calories.

Some experiments have been carried out on mice- which have shown that DHA and EPA are present in sardines, tuna, sablefish, and salmon. DHA and EPA are the omega-3s having a chained structure. Hence, the people intending to lose weight have to go hunting for these fishes.

Fish oil has been tested on mice by the Czech researchers and some amazing results have been recorded. When the intake of DHA and FPA was increased to 12% (from 1%), there was an alarming reduction of weight gain caused due to high-fat. It also caused reduction of accretion of adipose, i.e. fat cells, in the abdomen, in particular. Thus, it reduced the risk of a heart attack. The foods containing DHA and EPA boosted the metabolism of glucose (sugar) and fat as well.

But, this is a slow process. Utmost patience is needed while following this diet. The human body always takes time to adapt to the changes. Similarly, the reprogramming of genes start very slowly, hence it takes time to give out positive results. Moreover, the intake of saturated fat and foods with a high content of carbohydrates and vegetable oils, and red meat should be reduced.

Five healthy foods

Friday, April 4th, 2008

Five basic foods that contain plenty of nutrients that help a great deal in improving the digestive system and resistance power are given below:

Beet greens and red beets

Beet greens and red beets are the best option for people having a constipation problem. Both of them are rich in fiber. This causes the waste materials to be on a constant move through the small intestines as well as the large intestines. Red beets can boast of a high content of magnesium and potassium, while ‘beet greens’ contain calcium, iron, and beta-carotene. These nutrients play a vital role in reviving the digestive system. But, they should be steamed and eaten, as they will act as a hindrance to digestion if eaten raw.

Sweet Potatoes and ‘Yak on Gold Potatoes’

They should be eaten with their skins as far as possible. This is a rich source of manganese, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and carbohydrates. They also help in curing duodenal ulcers and peptic ulcers, especially in GI tracts.

Avocados

A single avocado can boast of 15g of fiber, thus, proving to be the fruit having the highest quantity of fiber. Avocados are easily digestible and contain an abundance of raw healthy fat.

Oats

Oats contain soluble-fiber in plenty. They also contain zinc, vitamin E, folate, copper, manganese, phosphorus, thiamin, and selenium. Steel-cut oats are the best ones to eat. They do not require any heating. Rolled oats require heating, but then they become depleted of nutrients.

Cod-liver Oil

It is a source of vitamin A and vitamin D. Vitamin D prevents bone diseases.

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

It is now a known fact world wide that certain herbs can do wonders if used appropriately. Certain herbs did not reach out worldwide previously but have more recently been known for their important qualities. One of them is garlic. It was used in some parts of Asia extensively and in many families it was found that the intake of garlic was very high. There have been many researches conducted on it and are still being conducted to explore more about the wonder herb.

Studies have proved that a garlic consumed a day can actually prevent cancer. It does only keep cancer at bay but is also useful for many other health problems. It was known in olden days to keep away common cold. Raw garlic is also used to treat acne related symptoms. It is a natural repellent for mosquitoes and is useful for keeping certain blood pressure related issues and heart issues in control. Flu to a certain extent can be prevented and cured by the appropriate intake of garlic.

However garlic is not all that good for all. There are certain people that have an irritation towards this wonder herb. A few people are allergic to garlic while some may not simply be able to tolerate the smell of it. Consumption of garlic in more proportion is not good for health and some may not be able to digest the amount. It may also have side effects in case it is consumed in more proportions. ketogenic-diet.jpg

It is difficult for many to maintain a diet plan. If this is the case with normal humans, it is much more difficult for children with particular deficiencies. The ketogenic diet was invented in the 1900s. This diet is extensively used for people affected by epilepsy. It did gain popularity and was used extensively but in due course of time with the new inventions in the field of food and nutritional diet the ketogenic diet lost its importance and was slowly out of use.

One major aspect that many fail to understand is that the diet supplements and many other nutritional diet plans may have side effects in the long term that may cause major concerns. Many diet plans in fact have been recently brought under the government scanner for their side effects. On the contrary the ketogenic diet has absolutely no side effects and is one of the major benefits why it is considered and is coming back in use recently. It is gaining popularity now and is duly its right.

The question would definitely arise as to what exactly is this ketogenic diet about or how does it work? There are times when the carbohydrate content in the body is very low and the fat content comparatively high. It is now when the body breaks down, that the fat content in order to create energy generates a particular kind of chemical known as ketones. The ketogenic diet is nothing but a diet that helps or rather makes ketones. Even if there are ketones in excessive quantity to some extent, it is excreted by the body and does not have any side effects.
